Sustainability through Green HR!

I was tasked to learn something that I am passionate about and write on it. This sounds like a sales person giving you to good a deal to be true. I asked myself:

Strings attached? There were none.

This was the start of my extraordinary journey with a course provided by Future Learn through RMIT University on Business futures: Sustainable business through Green HR!

Before I start, I have to first include the proof that I have completed this course, otherwise this would be…Hogwash.

Now this course was a bit challenging for me, as I don’t want to come of as a lecturer reteaching what I learnt, so I'll focus on some ideas, concepts and all-around bizarre moments I encountered during this endeavor. But before we start, I'll give you a quick introduction of why I learnt sustainability- well its simple, I want to save those who cannot save themselves e.g., animals and the earth.

Ready to begin?

Similar to a car or vehicle, it needs a driver. So, I envisioned sustainability as car and us people as the drivers. In the course the drivers which provide action to the vehicle which is sustainability are:

Internal:

  • Ethical leadership

  • Organizational culture

External:

  • Consumer expectations

  • Society’s increased awareness about sustainability

  • The organization’s reputation, and

  • Government policy and regulations.

This was especially interesting, as this allowed for me to understand that some components that are needed for change are sometimes out of my control. So, I need to hone in on those factors (Internal) which I can affect to create huge change. Also, by working on the internal drivers, it will have a domino effect on some of the external drivers.

A concept which I wasn’t even aware of was the- The triple top line: a conceptual tool. Heard it before? I doubt it. You see this model sought to figure out the challenge that most businesses face and that it to balance their traditional economies and profit objectives with social and environmental needs.

In simple terms this model focuses on maximizing the impact of the three economic, environmental and economy factors without causing harm to the environment. This sounds simple even to me but when you factor in the thousands and millions of steps to reach this balance as well as to maintain the balance its extremely difficult, but not impossible.

To conclude this amazing blog, yeah-come one let’s get some energy!!!!

Green HR in cavemen language means- “grung grung ha-ha” no I am kidding. It means that HR is a key component in helping the business become sustainable. This is the reason why I decided to undertake this course as my passion is sustainability, is because by understanding which departments are important for sustainability, that would allow me to better understand sustainability as a whole much more comprehensively and how to implement it effectively.

So, for me this was truly exciting and I loved every moment of learning this course. A huge thank you to the personal development and employment module as that further pushed my knowledge. Through this I know what it takes to become sustainable.
